Our Mission
The purpose of the Nottoway County Historical Association is to study, preserve, and disseminate the history and culture of this county, viz.:
1. to restore, care for, and make available to the public such landmarks and such personal property, relics, and artifacts as it shall acquire through gift or purchase.
2. to collect, study, and catalogue all obtainable manuscripts, or duplicates thereof, pertaining to the people or the past of Nottoway and to conduct research in the public records.
3. to cooperate with organizations with similar interests and with schools to create a knowledge of and a pride in our past.
Meetings
Meetings are held the 4th Tuesday in the months of February, May, September and November, and include a business meeting over dinner, followed by a presentation and discussion of a topic of interest. Past topics range from Hyde Park Farm to historic houses of Nottoway, to a discussion on historic quilts and fabric preservation.
Special events are also held throughout the year, and include an annual Christmas Music Festival at Old Brick, local history forums, and a presentation on the historic Nottoway Bible.
Committees
In addition to participating in discussions and presentations, members have the opportunity to join the committees that most interest them, or to work on projects independently. Formal committees are:
- Infrastructure and Relics
- Genealogy and Cemeteries
- Oral History and Heritage
- Documentation, Promotion, Education & Community Engagement
- Fundraising
Projects
Members, whether independently or through committees, undertake several unique projects, which include:
- Maintain and update the documents, books and records located in the local history sections of the Crewe and Blackstone Libraries.
- Maintain and restore the Nottoway Presbyterian Church, “Old Brick”’
- Record and preserve an oral history of Nottoway County by interviewing residents
- Locate and record all cemeteries located in Nottoway County.
- Locate and catalogue all historic houses located in Nottoway County.
